The mission of the Fred T. Foard Counseling Department is to focus on removing academic, social, emotional, and systemic barriers to advocate for all students to prepare to be responsible, culturally aware citizens and lifelong learners. We will accomplish this by providing and evaluating a relevant comprehensive guidance program each year implemented by professional school counselors who work with students in academic, social/emotional, and career domains that contribute to student learning and achievement. The school counselors provide individual counseling related to a variety of emotional, social, and academic issues. They frequently collaborate with other professionals such as the school social worker, school nurse, and school psychologist in order to assess students' needs in a comprehensive manner and for the purpose of effective and efficient response to student concerns. The school counselors desire to help students develop their talents and interests via the academic experience while gaining an understanding of themselves.
In addition to offering individual counseling, school counselors advise students regarding course selections, promotion standards, and graduation requirements while assisting with post-high school planning and preparation. Resources in Student Services include college applications, college guidebooks, financial aid applications, scholarship search tips, information on a wide variety of careers, and SAT/ACT registration packets. Students may visit the resource area before or after school and during lunch.
The Office of Student Services operates from 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. each day; students see their counselor by appointment except in emergency, crisis situations, or during lunch. Students are welcome to drop by the counseling office any time during a non-core class without an appointment, but there is no guarantee their counselor will be available to see them. Parents should call the office to make an appointment when they want to meet with their child's counselor or if they would like to schedule a parent/teacher conference. Parents may also call the office to request work if their child will be out of school for more than two days.
